Usually a TECA (the removal of the ear canals) leaves the dog deaf for the rest of his life, however the veterinary surgeon discovered that Riley’s hardened and narrowed right horizontal ear canal was not the result of chronic inflammation. Instead, Riley had a large hematoma on that ear flap which was never treated so he developed extensive cartilage overgrowth and scarring which resulted in the collapse of the horizontal ear canal.
Once the surgeon removed all of the excessive cartilage, he discovered that Riley’s vertical ear canal was clear and healthy so he constructed an opening so that Riley could hear, and he does!
The ear flap itself was so badly thickened that it had to be removed. Riley is finally free of all discomfort and, best of all, he can hear the sound of kibble being scooped into his bowl, the car engine (he loves to go for rides), and, best of all, the voice of his foster family.
The total cost of Riley’s ear surgery was $4,384.71. Your generous donations to *The Joey Fund paid for this expensive, specialty surgery!
