What is Cocker
Spaniel Rescue of New England, Inc.? CSRNE is the only
rescue organization servicing all six New England states by taking
in abandoned, unwanted or abused cockers, providing medical
treatment, and finding qualified homes for them. We receive over 600
calls a year to help homeless cockers.
Why do cockers
need to be rescued? Thousands upon thousands of cockers are bred
each year for pet stores by puppy mills and backyard breeders. The
American Kennel Club registered over 45,000 cocker spaniels in 2000,
and this figure doesn't count the vast number of dogs that were
never registered. Cockers have become commonplace orphans in animal
shelters and pounds. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that 25 to
30% of the canine population at shelters are abandoned, purebred
dogs.
Cockers come to us
from a variety of sources:
-
Owners who have
died or who are in poor health
-
Owners who no
longer have the time or money to devote to a pet
-
Owners moving to
apartments that don't allow pets
-
Overcrowded animal
shelters
-
Cockers found
abandoned and roaming the streets.
What happens to a
cocker while it is waiting for a home? Before placement, every
cocker is thoroughly examined by a veterinarian, neutered/spayed,
vaccinated and heartworm tested. In many cases, years of neglect
have left serious medical problems untreated - eye, ear and skin
infections; heartworm disease; parasites; broken bones left to heal
on their own, to name only a few. CSRNE responds to every
call we receive regarding a cocker in need of help. Foster homes
provide temporary respite for cockers awaiting adoption. If none are
available, local kennels must be used, especially if there is a dog
in an abusive situation.
How does CSRNE pay
for all this? To pay our medical and kenneling bills, CSRNE
depends entirely on private donations made by members and the many
fundraisers we hold throughout the year. A family membership costs
only $25. Here's what your membership buys a needy cocker:
-
All shots and a
heartworm test or
-
Half the cost of a
spay/neuter or
-
5 days of emergency
kenneling or
-
Grooming for a
flea-infested, matted dog
Because CSRNE
receives reduced veterinary and kenneling fees in many cases, $25
goes a long way!
Happy tails!
Because CSRNE was there -
-
Higgins endured the
weight of a 4.7-pound tumor on his neck until he was rescued and
underwent surgery for its removal. He now joins his new family for
strolls on a Cape Cod beach. His senior years will truly be his
best.
-
Fremont was cured
of advanced heartworm disease and now snoozes in his very own bed
with a family who adores him.
-
Copper's useless
leg, left untended after a car accident, is now functioning with
the use of a brace, and he is romping with his terrier friend in
his new home.
-
Daisy was found on
a busy highway in horrific condition - emaciated, blind in one
eye, broken teeth, eye and ear infections and almost hairless from
flea infestation. She is now the little princess in a doting home
with another rescue cocker for her to play with.
And there are
hundreds more success stories because of the existence of CSRNE.
What does your
membership buy you? Your annual membership of $25 (or more)
brings you:
-
Our biannual
newsletter, the Cocker Home Companion, featuring articles of
interest to all cocker lovers
-
Notice of upcoming
CSRNE events
-
A tax-deductible
donation to a federally exempt, 501(c )(3) organization
-
And, most
important, the knowledge that YOU are personally responsible for
helping a needy cocker.
Higgins, Copper, and
all the rescue cockers past and present are safe, warm, well fed and
loved in their new homes. Please help us be there for all the dogs
who will need us tomorrow. Join CSRNE by sending your
