We just had to put Molly's latest update right here at the top of the page, but PLEASE, scroll down and read her entire story.

Update from Molly: April 8, 2009

Hi everyone, Molly here.  I want to let you know how I have been doing!!  As you can see by the pictures, my bandage is off and my leg is completely healed!!  It looks a little different from my other legs, but that’s OK, I am healthy and in good shape.  Don’t worry, my fur is a little discolored from the medicine Foster Momma soaked my foot in to get rid of the itchies from the bandage.  It is all healed now and no more soaking.  I always wondered what I would look like as a red head!

I’ve had my last visit with Angell Hospital and got a clean bill of health.  Dr. Pavletic (white coat) looks very serious, but believe you me, he is the best doctor!  He was the doctor in charge of my recovery and I have been told he is a genius!  He must be, he helped to save my life.

The man in the blue shirt is my good buddy Dr. Rosenblat, my dentist.  He was just pleased as punch that my mouth healed so well.  He was very excited when Foster Momma told him I was eating kibble mixed with my wet food.  You would never know I was in so much pain before he helped me and that I only have four teeth left.  That doesn’t stop me from eating though!  I am up to 22 pounds!!!  I love to eat and do a pretty good job at it!

Word spread quickly I was in the hospital and a couple of my fans stopped by to see me before I had my bandage off.  I had a good time visiting the hospital, but so happy I am home and don’t have to go back, just to my regular vet and regular visits!

Foster Momma gave me a haircut too!  She said I was such a good girl next time I can go to the doggy salon and get my nails done too!  My love and thanks to all of who have helped with my recovery, it has been quite the ride and I am happy to be alive!!!!

Wags and licks, Molly

Please click here for the beginning of Molly's story - when she first came to CSRNE in January, 2009.

The following 3 photos were taken when she was rushed to the vet right after she came to CSRNE in January 2009..

Molly's gum disease

Molly's story  – When our volunteer, Linda, picked up Molly on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 she was horrified. All 4 of her legs were encased in cement-hard mats, she couldn’t put any weight on her right front foot and the awful smell was overpowering. It was obvious that Molly was a very sick dog and in a lot of pain. Linda rushed Molly to her vet who said that it was the worse case of neglect that he had ever seen. Molly was dripping pus from her leg and she was severely malnourished. The vet recommended that we take her immediately to the emergency room at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston. The vets in Angell’s ICU were very concerned about her condition. They immediately put Molly on an IV for fluids, antibiotics and pain medication. A wide range of diagnostic tests and X-rays revealed that she was anemic, had significant thinning of the bone in her leg and there was real concern that her leg might need to be amputated due to a long standing infection.

The ICU vets then began the long, tedious process of surgically cutting off the mats. She weighed 14 pounds before the procedure and 11 pounds after the rock solid mats were removed.

Once the mats were cut off a pain and wound specialist was able to do several laser procedures which help skin growth and tissue development. She would now have to be anesthetized daily for wound cleaning and a bandage change.

By Wednesday, Molly was already showing signs of improvement and she was ravenously hungry – always an encouraging sign, especially in a cocker. The word was spreading around the ICU about the adorable little cocker “with a lot of spirit” and Molly received regular visits from an adoring fan club.

By the end of the week, Molly was feeling much better and even trying to get out of her cage! Her leg was healing well, she had gained two pounds, but the best news from the vets was that she would not need to have her leg amputated! She was well enough to spend the weekend with Linda – now her foster mom.

Molly also was diagnosed with advanced gum disease so she had to go back to Angell Memorial on Monday, February 2, for extensive dental surgery. All except 4 of her teeth had to be extracted and she’ll need to eat canned dog food for the rest of her life – which she loves so this is not a problem.

Molly is back in foster care with Linda. She loves to be held, she follows Linda everywhere and she has made it clear to Linda’s other cockers that she is the boss!

Molly is on antibiotics, an oral rinse and her bandage must be changed every three days. She’ll need to be re-examined in 3 weeks by the soft tissue surgeon and the dentist. She may also need further laser treatments to help with new skin growth.

Through all of this trauma, Molly’s tail never stopped wagging and she wanted to kiss everyone she met. The ICU vet summed it up perfectly when she said, “this little dog has a lot of spirit!”

Once again we’re appealing to our devoted CSRNE friends. We know these are tough economic times and we appealed to you a month ago to help the heartworm positive cockers, but any amount you can spare to help Molly will be greatly appreciated.

Molly refused to give up and neither can we. She wanted to live and with your support we can continue to care for other severely neglected cockers. And you’ll feel so good knowing you helped save this little trooper.

Thank you.

Molly's is being treated and is doing well - she's a little trooper!

Molly is getting better

Update from Molly herself!!!  - February 9, 2009
Hello …this is Molly!  I wanted to give a big THANKS to all my very generous CSRNE friends!!!!  I thought I would let everyone know how I am doing.  Well, I will sum it up in one word …FANTASTIC!  I feel so much better than I was a couple of weeks ago.  I am weighing in at whopping 15 pounds!  I love to chase my foster brothers around the house, it is so much fun to see them run from me …little Molly!
I love it when we go for walks and I keep up with the rest of the clan, I can out run all of them …just unhook me I’ll show ‘em. Foster Mom won’t let me though; she said it is too dangerous.  Oh well, I can still chase the boys around the house!
My foster Mom took me to see a very nice man today, I call him Doctor Sean.   Doctor Sean said I am healing nicely and doing so well instead of getting my bandages changed every 3 or 4 days, I go in a week!
This is Molly signing off …next communication I will include a picture, so you can see how cute I am!

 Much love, Molly

Update from Molly - February 19, 2009

   Little Miss Princess (Molly)

Molly with her boot - to protect her bandaged foot

Hi CSRNE friends …it’s me Molly!!  I wanted to take a few minutes to give you a little update on my progress.   Monday I went to my good friend Dr. Sean.  He changed my bandage and he said I am healing very nicely.  I am running around like you wouldn’t believe!  Nothing holds me back …well except for my leash!  I go back to Dr. Sean next Monday for another bandage change and then next Wednesday I go back to see all my friends at the MSPCA Angell Hospital in Jamaica Plains.
They want to check the progress of my boo boo leg and the dentist wants to see how my mouth and 4 remaining teeth are doing.  Don’t worry I can still eat and boy do I LOVE to eat …I get 3 squares a day and it is DEE-LISH!!!  As a matter of fact I have gained another 9 ounces since last week, so I am now at 15.9 lbs.
I have included a few pictures so you can see for yourselves how well I am doing!!  I will keep you posted on my continued good health!  Spring is in the air …think warm thoughts!     Much love, Molly

As of Feb. 2, 2009 it took 6 days of highly specialized veterinary care and $4,641.14 to save Molly.
