Frankie and Sunny
Miracle at a campground
Update - August 2009: By the end of
August, Sunny was showing signs of losing his battle with cancer
and our wonderful vet gently put him to sleep on August 27,
2009. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The animal control officer found both Sunny
and Frankie at a local campground on a freezing cold day in
early March. Both of them were skin and bones - in fact you
could count every bone on Sunny’s spine. They were filthy dirty,
severly matted, and starving, but so very glad that help had
finally come. Both dogs went right up to the dog officer – Sunny
barely able to walk – their stubby tails were wagging furiously. No one knew how long they had been abandon
but it was long enough for them to become emaciated. The
questions is…how on earth did these two older cockers survive.
In the weeks that followed their stay at the small town shelter,
clues began to emerge. Both dogs are utterly devoted to each
other Frankie, (about 8 years old) never takes his eyes off of
Sunny (who is about 13 years old and quite arthritic). One day
at the shelter, the dog officer watched as Frankie pulled his
blanket over near Sunny’s bed and proceeded to cover him up from
head to toe. When Sunny moved around and became uncovered,
Frankie covered him up again. Did Frankie find an old blanket at
the campground to protect Sunny? Did he scrounge food for them
both? Were they able to find a dry, warm spot under one of the
bath houses? No one knows, but the odds of these two senior
cockers surviving on their own were minimal at best. Their devotion to each other helped
to beat the odds. In early June, when the dog officer gave up
all hope of someone reclaiming these two abandoned cockers, she
called us.
CSRNE’s foster mom immediately got them to
our vet who did a thorough geriatric exam, blood workup and
culture and sensivity test. Sunny has significant arthritis in
his hind end and an inoperable abdominal mass. His ears look
fine and he’s taking Dasuquin for his arthritis. He is happy,
not in any pain and just loves to eat. Frankie has several benign growths which
will be removed. Some of his teeth are rotten and infected so
he’ll have a complete dental procedure. They are both on a bland
diet and antibiotics for increased liver and pancreatic levels.
The really good news is Sunny and Frankie
are so enjoying their new soft bed (they sleep together of
course). They love the big grassy play yard and regular meal
times. Our vet was very pleased when he rechecked them recently.
Since Sunny started taking Dasuquin he’s walking more and better
which makes it very challenging for Frankie to keep track of him! Sunny and Frankie cannot be separated and
giving Sunny’s uncertain prognosis and Frankie’s undying
devotion to him they will stay in long term foster care with us
for as long as necessary. Sunny and Frankie’s story is one of
abandonment, survival and love. Watching these two cockers
together is to witness pure love in action. It is the real joy
of rescue work and all of you help to make it possible.
As of
June 25th we’ve spent $290.30 in vet bills but the
charges for more blood workup, antibiotics and Frankie’s dental
surgery are yet to come. We’ll post these bill when we receive
them. As always, we rely on our caring friends to
help us save wonderful, needy cockers like Sunny and Frankie.
Any amount you can donate would be so appreciated. Thank you and
stay tuned for new photos.
